Amrith continues golfing form
by S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen
Amrith de Soysa continued his good form at Victoria and Nuwara Eliya
when he won the men's gross while the same event for ladies was lifted
by expatriate Sharon Hall at the highly competitive annual Club
Championship of Victoria Golf and Country Resort which was sponsored by
Etisalat and worked off for two days at the award winning Victoria golf
course at Rajawella, Kandy last Sunday.
Amrith de Soysa was in good form and made a match winning total of
152 in the two rounds and had a six shot lead over the runner-up Ishira
Fernando who had 158. He scored a brilliant 73 in the first round and
followed it up with 79 in the second round. It was his first round
display of 73 that made De Soysa have the edge over Ishira Fernando who
made 78 and 80 for a combined total of 158.
Hall perhaps came up with her best over performance at Victoria by
winning the prestigious gross event for ladies with a combined total
score of 173 over the two rounds. On the first day she made 85 and
followed it up with 88 in the second. Last year's winner Niloo
Jayatillake was just two shots behind with a combined total of 175. It
was a poor first round which largely contributed for her failure when
she made 92 against 85 by Hall. But Jayatilleke fared much better in the
second scoring 83 against 88 by Hall.
Alenika Jenika won the ladies Net 153 against 154 by Louise Parson.
The men's Net was won by young Vidush Rajendra with a combined score
of 145 against 164 by the highly talented Sachin de Silva coming from
the golfing family of Anel and Usha de Silva. It was a poor performance
in the first round when he conceded a five point lead which resulted in
Sachin finishing second best.
