Navin pats Mathews and team
Minister of Tourism and Sports Navin Dissanayake yesterday
congratulated Sri Lanka cricket captain Angelo Mathews and his team
following their shock win over India in the first cricket Test in Galle.
Sri Lanka beat India by 63 runs while defending a target of 176 on
the afternoon of the fourth day.
The second cricket Test will be played at the P Sara Oval starting
August 20.
All Blacks beat Aussies to claim Cup
Flanker Richie McCaw became the most capped player in Test history as
his New Zealand side retained the Bledisloe Cup for a 12th year against
Australia yesterday.
McCaw, 34, led the side out at Eden Park as he overtook Ireland
centre Brian O'Driscoll's record of 141 caps.
New Zealand held a narrow 13-6 half-time lead before running in four
second-half tries to seal victory.
Two Dan Carter penalties and a converted Dane Coles try had put the
world champions ahead, with two Quade Cooper kicks keeping Australia in
touch going into the break. (BBCsport)
England in toughest ever pool
Rugby World Cup-winning captain Martin Johnson said being drawn in
the"toughest pool" the tournament has ever known could benefit England.
That is, if they see off the likes of Australia and Wales to finish
top of the pool.
Johnson, who skippered England to World Cup glory when they beat
Australia in the 2003 final in Sydney, is in no doubt of the scale of
the task confronting the current Red Rose side.
Tournament hosts England face Fiji, a side with a reputation for
raising their game at World Cups, two-time champions Australia and
familiar foes Wales on consecutive weekends in Pool A.
The way in which Australia beat reigning world champions New Zealand
27-19 in Sydney last week, to claim the Southern Hemisphere Rugby
Championship, has been duly noted in the England camp.(rugby365)
