SLFP 64 on WednesdayCelebrations in Polonnaruwa
The 64th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) will be
celebrated in Polonnaruwa on September 02, under the patronage President
Maithripala Sirisena, the leader of the SLFP.
Former SLFP leaders, including former Presidents Chandrika
Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Mahinda Rajapaksa have been invited to
attend the ceremony, while UPFA party leaders, heads of Local Government
bodies and Provincial Council members have also been invited.
An Ashirvada Pooja to invoke blessings on the party leaders and
members will be held at the ancient Somawathi Temple at 7.00 a.m. on
September 02. A Pirith chanting ceremony will be conducted at the
Rankoth Vehera premises, Polonnaruwa from 10.00 a.m. on the same day,
while multi- religious ceremonies will be held throughout the week to
invoke blessings on the Party, the people and the country.
The SLFP was founded by the late Prime Minister S.W.R.D Bandaranaike
in 1951 after breaking away from the United National party (UNP) and
quickly rose to the level of the island’s second largest political
party. The SLFP has so far seen four leaders, including Sirimavo
Bandaranike, Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Mahinda Rajapaksa.
President Maithripala Sirisena is the party’s fifth leader. |
