SLFP 64 on WednesdayCelebrations in Polonnaruwa

The 64th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) will be celebrated in Polonnaruwa on September 02, under the patronage President Maithripala Sirisena, the leader of the SLFP.

Former SLFP leaders, including former Presidents Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Mahinda Rajapaksa have been invited to attend the ceremony, while UPFA party leaders, heads of Local Government bodies and Provincial Council members have also been invited.

An Ashirvada Pooja to invoke blessings on the party leaders and members will be held at the ancient Somawathi Temple at 7.00 a.m. on September 02. A Pirith chanting ceremony will be conducted at the Rankoth Vehera premises, Polonnaruwa from 10.00 a.m. on the same day, while multi- religious ceremonies will be held throughout the week to invoke blessings on the Party, the people and the country.

The SLFP was founded by the late Prime Minister S.W.R.D Bandaranaike in 1951 after breaking away from the United National party (UNP) and quickly rose to the level of the island’s second largest political party. The SLFP has so far seen four leaders, including Sirimavo Bandaranike, Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Mahinda Rajapaksa. President Maithripala Sirisena is the party’s fifth leader.
