Galle cricket fans escape the axe

Galle’s passionate cricket followers came close to losing out on a
Test match between Sri Lanka and the West Indies scheduled for next
month as cricket officials debated a possible financial setback.
The West Indies are listed to play two Tests, three ODIs and two
T-20s starting in the first week of October on their tour of Sri Lanka.
But due to its seemingly eternal financial crisis, Sri Lanka Cricket
(SLC) entertained suggestions to stage both Tests in Colombo to cut down
on costs.
Later it was decided that Galle, the most patronized Test venue in
the country, will host the first Test and the P Sara Oval the second
Test. According to an SLC official, the West Indies-Sri Lanka series
could not be marketed for more than Rs.45 million which is a massive
slump in revenue compared to the concluded Indian series which was sold
to the Sony television company for Rs.350 million. |
