St. Anthony's girls trounce Jaffna College at forbidden venue

St. Anthony's Girls College Kandy trounced Jaffna College 5-0 on the opening day of the National School Games under-19 hockey championship at the Royal College Astro turf in Colombo yesterday.

The match was scheduled to be played at the ground of Sirimavo Bandaranaike Girls' School but was shifted to the Astro turf as the original venue was over-grown with grass.

But the match between Seethadevi Girls College and Pandithiruppu Girls College was not played for the same reason as the Jaffna girls refused to play on the Astro turf.

The Anthonian girls completely dominated play through some brilliant stick work by centre forward Nadushani Sithumini who slammed the first two goals in style for her team-mates to carry out a mopping up operation thereafter.

The other goal scorers were centre forward Oshadee Medagoda (2) and Dilakshi Perera..

The Sirimavo Bandaranaike ground is expected to ready by today.

In the boys segment St. Aloysius College Galle scored a sensational 3-1 win in a penalty shoot-out over the champion outfit from Matale, Christ Church College.

The match ended in a scoreless draw before the penalty shoot-out.

In other matches Joseph Vaz beat Nalanda 2-0 and St. Thomas' College Matale beat Jaffna College 3-0.
