Re-allocation of State bodies to boost growth
The new government which places emphasis on sustainable
socio-economic development has set up ministerial portfolios to support
its ambitious growth targets. There have been new ministries and
shifting of State institutions under different ministries to ensure
holistic development could be achieved in a sustainable manner.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is the Minister of Policy
Planning and Economic Affairs.Other key ministers related to economic
development include Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, Industry and
Commerce Minister Rishad Bathiudeen, Social Empowerment and Welfare
Minister S.B. Dissanayake and Public Enterprise Development Minister
Kabir Hashim.The key institutions under the Ministry of Policy Planning
and Economic Affairs are: CRIB, National Salaries Commission, Fund for
Strikes, Civil commotion and terrorist activities, EPF, Public Utilities
Commission, National Youth Council, National Youth Front, National Youth
Award Authority, National Youth Services Cooperative, National Centre
for Leadership Development.Among the institutions under the Ministry of
Finance are the National Lotteries Board, Development Lotteries Board,
Lady Lochore Fund, Sri Lanka Export Credit Insurance Corporation and
Miloda Corporation.
Among the key institutes of the Ministry of Social Empowerment and
Welfare are: The Social Services Department, National Council for
Elders, National Elders Secretariat, National Council for the Disabled,
National Social Development Institution, Samurdhi Department, Village
Development Training and Research Institute and Social Protection
Board.The institutions under the Ministry of Industries and Commerce
include Lanka Sathosa, the CWE, Food Commissioner’s Department, Lanka
Salusala Limited, Cooperative Development Board, Lanka Textile Mills,
Cooperative Workers Commission Union, Internal Trade Department,
National Cooperative Development Institution, Sri Lanka Weaving Mills
and Garments, Handloom Industries Department, Kahatagaha Graphite, Lanka
Leyland, Lanka Ashok Leyland, Lanka Cement Corporation, Sri Lanka Cement
Corporation and Mantai Salt Limited.
Among the institutions of the Ministry of Public Enterprise
Development are Bogala Graphite, Lanka Ceramics Corporation, Kahagolla
Engineering Services Company (KESCO), BCC Limited, State Enterprise
Management Corporation, Hotel Developers Lanka Corporation, SriLankan
Airlines, Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation, all State banks and related
controlling companies and institutions, Lakdiva Engineering Corporation,
WESCO, Janatha Estates Development Board, Sri Lanka Plantations
Corporation, Elkaduwa Plantations Ltd, Kurunegala Ltd, Chilaw
Plantations Ltd and Galoya Plantations Ltd.The government hopes that the
re-allocation of State institutions will effectively facilitate the
five-year development plan and efficient coordination among the key
ministries that will drive the envisaged holistic and sustainable
socio-economic development. |
