Independent Commissions:
CC to shortlist nominees

The newly constituted Constitutional Council (CC), which convened on
September 23 is expeditiously make appointments to the independent
commissions for their urgent reactivation. After the appointment of its
10 members, the CC was convened by Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, where it was
decided to shortlist the nominations received for chairpersons and
members of the independent commissions when the Council is reconvened on
October 9.
The main function of the Council is to recommend suitable persons for
the position of chairperson or members of the independent commissions
coming under the purview of the Council.
According to sources, the Council has already received over 200
nominations as suitable appointees to the independent commissions. The
deadline for the nominations has been extended up to October 30.
The three civil society members in the CC, Dr. A. T. Ariyaratne, Dr.
Radhika Coomaraswamy and President’s Counsel Shibly Aziz have been
entrusted with the task of short listing the names.
The CC has decided to reactivate all independent commissions by
October end, sources added. |
