Canadian Tamil Congress demands sanctions against SL
The pro-LTTE Canadian Tamil groups recently held a demonstration and
a street event to call for sanctions and an international judicial
process against Sri Lanka.
The event coincided with the UN Human Rights Council sessions in
Geneva last week.
Organized by the Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) and National Council
of Canadian Tamils (NCCT), the participants carried flags of LTTE, a
banned terrorist outfit in Canada and placards calling for economic
sanctions against Sri Lanka.
CTC Spokesperson David Poopalapillai and Director CTC Danton
Thurairajah met with US Ambassador Bruce Heyman and Consul General Jim
Dickmeyer during the event. The protesters paraded in front of the US
consulate in Toronto.
Sri Lanka outlawed CTC and NCCT as terrorist entities under UN
Resolution 1373 in March 2014.
The organizers called the event a 'street fest' and invited Sri
Lankan Tamils to participate. The Canadian media reported the event as a
huge success.
A source in Canada said that ahead of the demonstration, the
directing figures of two terrorist fronts designated in Canada under
UNSCR 1373 lobbied Canadian politicians and US diplomats in Toronto and
Ottawa to support their call. - MF
