Expired, overpriced goods in the market

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has warned the public to beware of expired, over priced goods, which are now flooding the open market. "We are specially focusing on imported food due to rising complaints," Deputy Director Regional, Consumer Affairs Authority, Asela Bandara, told the Sunday Observer.

He said the latest raid carried out on September 28 had revealed a stock of chocolates, toffees and sweets imported from China stocked at a warehouse in Malwana.

"The perpetrators have been produced before court and their goods confiscated. Last month, we confiscated goods to the value of Rs. 1 million through the conduct of 1,600 raids islandwide. Most carried expired dates or false labelling," he noted. Chairman, CAA, Dr R.M.K Ratnayake invited affected consumers to telephone on the hotline 1919 to lodge formal complaints.
