Dialog's Army Para Games top prize goes to Light Infantry
As many as 450 differently-able service personnel took part in the
18th Army Para Games that was sponsored by Dialog Axiata where 14
disciplines were worked off at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Diyagama,
Homagama. The Sri Lanka Light Infantry, the oldest military regiment in
the country, was adjudged overall Champions while the Gajaba and
Vijayaba Infantry Regiments also took the honours by emerging first and
second runners up respectively.
Athletics, archery, badminton, cycling, shooting, table tennis, power
lifting, wheelchair marathon, tennis, basketball, swimming, wheelchair
volleyball, beach volleyball and softball cricket featured in the Games.
This year's Para Games also included differently-able servicemen and
athletes from Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Nepal.
Gunasekaran Anandan, a serviceman from the Indian army was adjudged
the best foreign participant.
Dialog is the current sponsor of the Sri Lankan Paralympic Contingent
for the next two years. They will contest the 2015 IPC World Athletics
Championship in Qatar this month.
Dialog first sponsored the Sri Lanka Paralympic contingent in 2000
followed by 2004 and 2008, including sponsorship of the National Sports
Festival for the differently-able. |
