Deals within deals
It is no secret that investigations on the disappearance of
Ekneligoda have ruffled a lot of feathers in the defence establishment.
From the outset, several top-notch military figures attempted to put
kakul maattu to the investigation claiming they posed a serious threat
to national security and the intelligence agencies.
A prominent figure among them was a certain Buzz Leader, a high
profile State official, who had to bid adieu to his post in early
September, mainly due to his clandestine efforts to hamper the
Ekneligoda inquiry.
Last week, another high-ranking defence official had instructed a
police bigwig to conduct the investigation, without jeopardising the
Army.
The instructions had been given soon after the Police unearthed
information to suggest that a former all-powerful defence boss was fully
aware of the journalist’s abduction and his subsequent ‘disappearance’.
Whether the defence official who held a hush-hush meeting with the
Police bigwig wanted to ‘rescue’ a particular individual remained a
question.
After all, deals within deals are not a rarity under the nine month
old yahapalana rule.
Troika panic
The troika who ran the State’s affairs under the previous rule -
namely the financial doctor, the Goat and Uncle Veeray - sneaked into a
prominent house down Paget Road, last week, for a round of important
meetings.
All three of them are now in hot water due to ongoing investigations
on the anti-corruption front. The Goat’s fear was mainly based on the
war crimes investigations while the other two had issues about
anti-corruption inquiries.
However, the troika met the Big Chief separately and the outcome of
the three meetings are kept a closely guarded secret – for the moment.
Heat over Royal bunker
One Amarey hailing from the backyard of the former royal family has
lashed out at his parliamentary colleague A-Prasanna from Gampaha for
the remarks the latter made defending the palatial underground ‘bunker’
built by the deposed king. A-prasanna, speaking to a pro-royalty website
few days ago, said the one who disclosed details about the palatial
bunker was an ‘imbecile’. His criticism was directed at the Chief of his
own party who revealed details of the underground palace to the public,
last week.
When this matter was raised at an internal meeting of the blue party,
Amarey, a staunch backer of ‘Maithri rule’, was livid at A-prasanna’s
rebellious behaviour. Amarey urged the Chief to take stern action
against A-prasanna who has declared war on the leader of his own party.
London Rugby World Cup getaway
Several top notch politicos are presently in London, enjoying the
Rugby fun. Some of them have bought stadium tickets to watch the finals
of the Rugby World Cup, between the All Blacks and the Wallabees.
They have left behind the hullaballoo of national politics back home
while partying the ‘London nights’ away!
Apart from politicos, some business tycoons too, whose names have
been mentioned in connection with a number of anti-corruption inquiries,
have left for London to witness the Rugby World Cup finals. Clearly, to
these privileged tycoons the FCID, the PRECIFAC or other investigative
bodies don’t really nag their minds as long as they can enjoy the World
Cup thrills.
