War crime charges and white van abductions:

I have spoken - Mervyn Silva

Former Minister Mervyn Silva who is known for making controversial statements said he is fully aware of the masterminds behind the abductions and killings during the previous regime. Early this year he alleged that former Minister Basil Rajapaksa and former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa were responsible for many abductions and killings. In an interview the Sunday Observer, the former minister said he has informed the law enforcement authorities of the truth. "I'm waiting for the officials to initiate investigations," he said.

Excerpts:

Q: You said you are aware of the masterminds of abductions and killings of the former regime? What are your comments?

A: I have already informed the law enforcement authorities. They need to commence investigations.

Q: You levelled allegations against former Minister Basil Rajapaksa and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa claiming they are responsible for many frauds, misdeeds, abductions and killings. Do you still stand by your statement?

A: I do not want to comment anymore. I already have filed a complaint against these issues at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). I have included all what I know in that complaint. It is now their responsibility to probe and bring the culprits to book.

Q: Do you urge the government to take action ?

A : I urge it to initiate investigations.

Q: If investigations are not initiated what will be your next step?

A: I strongly believe and have faith in the law enforcement system. I trust that they will take appropriate action at the right time.

Q: Recently you made a statement urging the Government to take a non-violent path giving examples from your conduct. Can you elaborate?

A : I called upon the authorities to put an halt to cattle slaughter and pointed out the importance to follow the vision of Anagarika Dharmapala rather than having commemorations of a great person. I question the government, if they can import pork, mutton why can not they import beef? Do not kill our cattle. I have cited examples that animal slaughter can be stopped. With the help of the public and the law enforcement officers animal slaughter can be stopped .

Q: What about the allegations levelled against you - the complaint at the Financial Crimes Investigation Division?

A: I am not moved by allegations made by every Tom, Dick and Harry.

Q: Will you appear before the Financial Crimes Investigation Division if you are summoned?

A: Yes definitely. I will abide by the law.
