Final Report on MH17 out

Dutch investigators release the final report on the disaster that killed 298 people when the jet flew over Ukraine in July last year.

The 15-month Dutch-led inquiry said the plane was hit by a Russian-made BUK surface-to-air missile fired from rebel-held territory over eastern Ukraine. The BUK rocket exploded just inches from the cockpit, killing the pilots and breaking the front of the plane.

Big Ben may grind to a halt

Big Ben, the British Parliament's iconic clock, is badly damaged that it could grind to a halt unless important repairs are carried out. A recent report shows that it will cost 29.2 million pounds ($65 million NZD) to fix. The repair bill could rise to as much as 40 million ($90 million NZD). The clock has problems with the bearings behind the hands and the pendulum. Repairing it would also see the clock shut down for four months.

Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London. The tower is known as the Elizabeth Tower, renamed as such to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II (prior to being renamed in 2012 it was known simply as "Clock Tower"). The tower holds the second largest four-faced chiming clock in the world (Minneapolis City Hall having the largest). The tower was completed in 1858 and had its 150th anniversary on May 31, 2009.

Bomb shelter found in family's garden

Ten years after moving into their house in Wisconsin, the Zwick family finally decided to find out what was beneath the steel doors in their backyard. Below the hatch was a chamber built by the house's previous owners to protect themselves from a nuclear attack during the Cold War.

The Zwick family found sealed U.S. Army boxes packed with all the supplies needed for a family to survive two weeks underground. Food, clothing, tools, batteries, medical supplies and flashlights that were found in the chamber were donated to the Neenah Historical Society
