International Neuroscience Workshop:

Gateway to postgraduate study in Europe

An International Neuroscience Workshop will be held from December 14 to 20 at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJP), as a unique gateway to postgraduate study in Europe. A special session has been organised with Prof. Harry W.M. Steinbusch, Director, European Graduate School for Neuroscience (EURON) in evaluating the proposals of prospective PhD candidates. This is the result of a Memorandum of Understanding that Professor Ranil De Silva, the organizer of the Workshop, was instrumental in securing between EURON and USJP, regarding double-PhD opportunities for Sri Lankan students.

The workshop comes under the auspices of the International Brain Research Organisation which represents 75000 neuroscientists and 80 global organisations. It will constitute practical sessions conducted by 25 international academic inventors of the highest caliber from Harvard Medical School, the University of Cambridge, the National University of Singapore, Maastricht University, Netherlands, George Washington University, Fudan University, China, and many faculty members of acclaimed institutions of higher learning from Japan, Australia, and India. It will see the participation of 15 international students as well.

A high-level delegation of industrial conglomerates from Beijing and Shanghai is also expected to actively participate in a natural products symposium to be held on 16th December as part of the Workshop. Centered on the use of natural products unique to Sri Lanka to foster healthy brain-aging, the conference aims to bridge industry and academia in private-public partnerships with international collaborations for research and development on natural products (i.e. tea, cinnamon and other native herbs) enhancing value addition through innovative product development. Benefiting both academia and industry, these developments are envisaged to greatly strengthen the global marketability of these products as brain-health beverages.

The symposium will also explore the integration of Ayurveda and modern medicine in a genomic approach, leading to the development of cost effect therapeutics to delay the progress of brain disorders. Dr. Mitali Mukerji, known for her work in this field has expressed keen interest in the Natural Products Symposium, and is expected to participate. Further, one of the practical session in the workshop highlights the neuroprotective therapies in brain diseases through cell culture technique ,an emerging avenue on neuronal cells in cultures as the novel potential drug targets for future therapeutic strategies

This is an exceptional opportunity for Sri Lanka, its natural products industry and its academia to establish international collaborations with delegations of great academic and industrial acclaim, in entering competitive global markets with a fresh boost for Sri Lankan enterprise.

Details of the workshop can be obtained from Professor Ranil de Silva, Director of the World Class University Project at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
