Truly
worth a 1000 words
Indian photographer Jayai Saha all set to wow Colombo
with her uniquely evocative photographs that capture the unseen and the
unnoticed:
A
split second storyteller who tells stories without saying a single word,
transaction lawyer turned photo-artist Jayati Saha of India amazes with
her frames of nuanced light and shadow, seamlessly fusing her art with
technical finesse.
Exhibited and owned worldwide, Jayati is a much-in-demand artist,
teacher and competition judge, whose extremely sensitive eye has
captured moments glistening with human emotions. Her forte is seeing the
unseen and the unnoticed.
Based out of Kolkata, India, Jayati, who is also contributor at the
Getty Images Inc., USA, is peripatetic and her journeys have taken her
to the India not known or seen by many. However, the sights and scenes
that are fascinating stories of life and living captured in her
photographs have been on display across India and in Romania and
Malaysia. They have also been published in various magazines across the
world.
These include the ‘Gujjars of Devmali’ about the life of people at
Devmali, a village in Ajmer, Rajasthan, India, ‘The Story of Holi’, the
festival of colours, ‘Labour of Faith’, a story of four incredible
persons who, through their immense faith, ignore their unavoidable daily
labour while observing Ramadan, without a drop of water and ‘Ashabari –
Home of Hope’, a story on the inmates of a mental health institution.
Jayati’s works have been critically acclaimed with various awards
including International Photography Awards, 2014, Prix De La
Photographie Paris, 2015, Travel Photographer Asia, 201, Humanity
Photography Awards, 2015.
Colombo will be home to Jayati’s solo endeavour. Her exhibition
titled ‘Celebrating Life With Colours’, organized by the Indian Cultural
Centre in association with University of Visual & Performing Arts,
Colombo, Photographic Society of Sri Lanka and University of Kelaniya
will be launched at the J.D.A Perera Gallery, Horton Place on November
15 and continue in various venues till November 26. The exhibition will
also include presentations titled ‘Presenting a story with images’.

Jayati on her self
I was a transaction lawyer and after 15 years of practice, I gave up
my career for my first love, photography. I am self-taught and love to
capture moments glistening with human emotions. My forte is seeing the
unseen and the unnoticed. I am a travel and documentary photographer.
Travel photography truly inspires me.
... on her brilliant use of natural light
I shoot when the natural light is soft and gives the perfect exposure
to the image, while taking care of the highlights and shadows. Early
morning hours when the sun is not harsh and in the evening about an hour
before the sunset are two best times. I also like to shoot beyond the
sunset taking advantage of the ‘blue hour’ till complete darkness sets
in.
I usually use the light in a way which gives a magical touch to the
image, back light being one such way. I avoid front light as it tends to
make the image look flat.
... her favourite photograph and the story behind it
My current project is on the celebration of life by the widows. I
shot this photograph during the Holi celebration by the widows of
Vrindavan. This photograph is very close to my heart because the
euphoria coupled with the light from top makes it a photograph, which
immediately connects with my soul. I love to see the joy in this image
despite the suffering of the widows in our society.
Best advice to aspiring photographers
Always look out for something unique.
Do your research well before going out to shoot.
Look for a soul connect with your frame. If you don’t find the
connect, then in all probability you are going to delete that frame
later.
Wear clothes which have neutral colours and do not attract
undesirable attention.
Learn to criticize your own work more than others.
Never be satisfied with a frame. The day you are satisfied, your
progress will stop.
