World's second largest diamond found

The second largest diamond in the world was found in Botswana, Africa.

The 1,111-carat stone, which is almost the same size as a tennis ball, was found at the Karowe mine, about 500 km north of Botswana capital, Gaborone.

It's thought to be the world's second biggest diamond and the biggest find in more than 100 years.

In April a flawless 100-carat diamond was sold for US dollars 22.1m (33.7 NZ dollars).

The biggest diamond ever found is the 3,106-carat Cullinan diamond.

It was found in South Africa in 1905 and cut into nine separate stones, many of which are among the British Crown jewels.

Teen Lifeguard saves four swimmers

A teenage off-duty lifeguard was congratulated for single-handedly saving four swimmers who got caught in a dangerous rip at the weekend - three of them young children.

Jack Virtue was in the car park at Wainui Beach at Gisborne on Saturday when he saw the children and their caregiver being swept out to sea. "I opened the door, ran out, ran down the beach ripping my clothes off and yelling for help," he said.

Wainui Surf Lifesaving club president Salvatore Zame said the club was very proud of the teenager. "He knew he was skillful enough to go out into the water in those conditions and rescue them," Zame said.

Ko Tied for third

New Zealand's top golfer Lydia Ko is in third place with one round to go at the Ladies Professional Golf Association (PGA ) tour's season finale in Florida.

The World No.1 began the day in outright second and shot a 3-under par 69 to move to 11-under overall. Ko remains two shots behind the leaders - Ha-Na Jang from South Korea and Cristie Kerr from USA.

Ko looks set to claim the LPGA Player of the Year award, the money list title and the top overall ranking.

The 18-year-old won her first major title earlier this year in France, but she faces a stiff challenge from South Korea's second-ranked Inbee Park as the season draws to a close.

Park is tied for 8th in Florida as she sits on 9-under for the tournament, two shots behind Ko.
