Painting nose and lip

We will start with a reminder on how to sharpen your pencil, rather than resort to a pencil sharpener. Most artists prefer to use a knife or a blade. This helps them to create a chisel point on a pencil which gives a wide edge for thick lines or shading, and a thin one for fine lines. After you have learned to draw facial features accurately then the whole face can be drawn with confidence. It is simpler to break the parts down into stages than to try to master the whole lot at once.

The nose is the most obvious part of the face to start with. It comes in all shapes and sizes. It can be crooked, straight or droopy. Small, long, thin, fat or well formed noses are usually found in every human face. Careful study is required before putting pencil to paper.

Fig. 1 will show the outline of drawing noses in different shapes and bottom face of a man and a woman with sharp nose.

Fig. 2 gives examples taken from life. Notice how the overall shape of each nose varies from person to person, the nostrils are essentially much the same. They only differ according to the angle from which they are viewed.

Fig. 3 gives you more ideas on how our noses can differ. Observe the way your nose is put together, how your nostrils appear as dark slots and varies in painting. I have shown a pale coating of colour texture according to one's own skin.

Drawing and painting bit of lip, there are numerous different mouth shapes and features change with age. Most lips are curvy with a dip in the middle of the upper one. Mouth can also be uneven, one side being different from the other.

Fig. 4 illustrates how lips reveal the lips are creased by small lines which follow the curve of the flesh. The lines can be deep or faint many or few and they tend to be criss-crossed in the elderly.

Take a step forward now, by drawing a nose and the mouth beneath it, as in example Fig. 5. Observe the different angles. Put the shading and few facial lines and I have shown in colour.

Drawing noses and mouths is straight forward and drawing can be done in an hour or two. The examples given here is to help you to become quick accurate and to draw with simple lines.
