STORIES, MYTHS, AND LEGENDS:

ON THE PATH TO THE SACRED MOUNTAIN

The United States-Sri Lanka Fulbright Commission will present a lecture by Ameena Hussein, writer and co-founder of the Perera Hussein Publishing House, on Stories, Myths and Legends on the Path to the Sacred Mountain: Tracking the 14th Century Moroccan traveller Ibn Battuta in Lanka, from 6.00 to 7.00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 16 at the US-Sri Lanka Fulbright Commission Auditorium, New Address: 55 Abdul Gaffoor Mawatha, Colombo 3.

Ibn Battuta made the pilgrimage to Adam's Peak, when he came to Sri Lanka in 1344. After 29 years of travel to various parts of the world, he returned to Morocca and wrote about the countries he travelled to and what he saw. Wednesday's presentation is an attempt to follow in the footsteps of Ibn Battuta in a 21st Century Sri Lanka uncovering myths, legends, and fantastic tales.

The study was inspired by the Silk Routes: Heritage, Trade, Practice a three-year project hosted by the International Writers' Program at the University of Iowa. The ancient Silk Route of both overland and sea have today been replaced by the newest Silken Web - the Internet. Using the project to showcase the countries along the ancient Silk Road highlighting literature, writing, person to person links and exchange, the Silk Routes project hopes to foster long term region wide networks united by a common engagement with the art of writing and creativity.

Ameena Hussein was invited to participate in the International Writers' Program conducted by the University of Iowa in 2005. Her novel 'The Moon in the Water' was longlisted for the Man Asian Literary Award and the Dublin IMPAC. Her first short story collection 'Fifteen' was shortlisted for the Gratiaen Prize in 1999 and her second collection of short stories 'Zillij' won the State Literary Prize in 2005. She has also edited three collections of children's stories and a collection of stories for adults. She is currently at work on a novel.

Entry to the lecture is by prior registration only and seating will be on a first-come first-served basis.
