Guessing game for AG’s post

The legal fraternity in Colombo is buzzing with the news of a new Attorney General assuming duties in January.

The Attorney General Yuvanjana Wijayatilake PC, is scheduled to retire on January 10, on completion of his term.

According to legal sources, there had been a few names thrown about for the top position, including those of Nalin Ladduwahetti, Solicitor General Suhada Gamalath, and Senior Addl. Solicitors General Jayantha Jayasuriya, and Kapila Waidyaratne.

However, sources said the latest addition to the list of names was Anura Meddegoda. Meddegoda had left the AG’s Department after he was served a Vacation of Post order by the then AG Sarath N. Silva, they pointed out.

Accordingly, now it has become a guessing game in Hulftsdorp as to who will become the next Attorney General. Officers in the AG’s Department were averse to an outsider being appointed but were in favour of either Jayantha Jayasuriya or Waidyaratne to succeed the present AG.

According to the order of hierarchy it is Suhada Gamalath, Jayantha Jayasuriya or Kapila Waidyaratne who should be considered for appointment.
