St. Benedict's win Percy Perera basketball title

St. Benedict's College, celebrating 150 years of human and Christian education this year, completed an outstanding 2015 when they won the Percy Perera Memorial Basketball Carnival last Monday at Kotahena.

St. Benedict's beat Maris Stella College, Negombo 44-38 in a thrilling final.

The champions beat St. Anne's College, Kurunegala by two points in a close semi-final while Maris Stella won a one-sided semi-final against Ananda College.

St. Anne's beat Ananda in the consolation final.

Naveen James finished with 22 points and was named the Most Valuable Player.

St. Benedict's vice-captain Asiru Karawitage was adjudged the Best Defensive Player while Maris Stella's Nipun Fernando was named the Best Offensive Player.

Seven-year-old Kenol Fernandopulle of Maris Stella was declared the Most Deserving Player while Anuj Ganlath of St. Benedict's was the Best Shooter of the competition.

World Cup winning former cricket captain Arjuna Ranatunga was the Chief Guest.

The Provincial Visitor of De La Salle Brothers Rev. Bro Christy Croos, Director St. Benedict's College, Rev. Bro Janaka Fonseka, Wasantha Jayalath (Late Percy Perera's son-in-law), former national basketball captain Cosmos Perera, Lalith Madappuli, Chairman SBC Cricket Wing and Rev. Bro Pravin Vaz, Sports Co-Coordinator of St. Benedict's gave away the awards.
