Asian flavour in Cuba

The Fashion Show and Gala Dinner organised by the Asian Ladies Association at Hotel Riviera in Havana recently to celebrate the 55th Anniversary of the Cuban Women Federation, marked yet another milestone in Asia - Cuba relations.

The evening began with the lighting of the oil lamp by the Secretary General of the Cuban Women Federation and Chief Guest, Teresa Amarelle Boué, accompanied by dignitaries from the Cuban Government, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and President of Asian Ladies Association. This was followed by a 'welcome dance' presented by a group of Sri Lankan students to bless the audience.

Opening the Fashion Show, lady Ambassadors and diplomatic spouses representing 25 countries around the world came on stage and presented an elegant dress parade featuring Asian costumes, which was the first of its kind in Cuba.

The President of the Asian Ladies Association, Ramanika Dissanayake, spouse of Sri Lanka Ambassador to Cuba delivering the welcome address, emphasised the significance of 'Asia's Unity and Diversity' in the context of the multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural character of Asia and its peoples. While thanking the distinguished ladies from Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean and Middle East who volunteered to model Asian costumes for a worthy cause in a spirit of unity and solidarity, the President of the Asian Ladies Association applauded the Cuban Women Federation's services for the socio economic emancipation of Cuban women and women around the world.

The members of the Asian Ladies Association also staged an extended fashion show and showcased contemporary dancing acts, rhythms and multicultural talents. The Fashion Show and Cultural Extravaganza that continued for nearly three hours, captivated the audience of over 300 guests.

Of the models who joined the fashion show, the Sri Lankan Saree clad - ladies became the star attraction and were the most elegantly dressed. The finale saw a stunning magical performance by a Cuban Magician and a group dance by all ladies and artistes to a rousing standing applause.
