[Short Story]
The Adventures of Dickie Dormouse
Dickie Dormouse hurried across the farm yard and went to visit his
cousin one morning. It was useless trying to sleep, because a crow had
been making a terrible noise.
Dickie washed his paws, and brushed his fur until it shone. Going to
his pantry, he found that it was
empty. “My whiskers!” he said. “Now I shall have to go out and find
some
food.”
Peeping round the door of farmer Bunn’s barn, where he slept, Dickie
looked left and then to the right. There, in the middle of the farmyard,
sat the farm cat, Black Joe, who liked nothing better than chasing
Dickie Dormouse.
Dickie knew it was hopeless to try and pass him, because Black Joe
slept
with one eye open.
”I shall have to wait until the farmer’s wife calls him in for his
breakfast,” said Dickie. It was nearly an hour before Mrs Bunn came to
the kitchen door shouting:
”Breakfast! Breakfast!” Banging a spoon on a tin plate, Mrs Bunn made
a
terrible din.
Black Joe stretched, and let out a big yawn, saying: “Ah,
breakfast—about time too!”
Dickie hurried across the farmyard and went to visit his cousin. Martha
was
having breakfast when Dickie arrived, and she invited him to sit down
and have his fill. Martha told him the good news that Mrs Mouse had just
had a new baby called Marcus.
On his way home, Dickie peeped in to see the
new baby, and Mrs Mouse invited him to have another breakfast. When
Dickie arrived home, he went to bed under some straw. “My whiskers!” he
said sleepily.
”Two breakfasts in one day! Why, it’s almost too good to be true!”
Then
Dickie curled up and fell fast asleep
