Independence Day means . . .

Pamudi Thavinsa

An interesting lesson

Our teacher briefed us on Independence Day. It was a very interesting lesson.

My teacher said that D.S. Senanayake became the first Prime Minister of Sri Lanka after we got Independence from Britain in 1948. I like reading essays on Independence Day. The President of Sri Lanka, Maithripala Sirisena will deliver a speech at a special event during Independence Day celebrations.

Lots of competition

All Sri Lankans will be celebrating the 68th Independence Day this year. There are several competitions conducted by the Ministry of Education for school children to mark the day. Many programs have been organised in my school such as essay, oratory and art competions, based on the theme 'Independence'. I too take part in them. Happy Independence Day to all.

A great big struggle

I remember learning about the struggles in my history lessons at school when discussing Independence Day. The day reflects the beginning of a new journey. As a citizen of Sri Lanka I feel very happy about the National Day.

The day we gained independence

President raises the National Flag on this day. I like to listen to his speech. It is a national holiday. This is the day we gained independence from British rule. We also remember the national heroes who made this day possible.

Long parades

I love watching the commemoration of the Independence Day on the television screen. Every year I wake up early morning and watch the entire program. I love to watch the long parades and the marching armed forces. I am eagerly looking forward to watch the program this year too. Happy Independence Day!

National unity

While speaking about the Independence Day, I remember words such as bravery, confidence, dedication, national unity, patriotism, nationalism and peace. The Independence Day of Sri Lanka is celebrated by all Sri Lankans. This day is a national holiday in Sri Lanka and every year grand celebrations take place in Colombo. The main event will be the speech by the President. There are also dances, singing and performances that showcase national unity and culture. I wish everyone a happy Independence Day.
