Adds another title to a growing list by beating St. Joseph's College
to win the all-island basketball trophy :
Gateway College won the Under 15 All Island A Division Basketball
Championship by beating St. Joseph's College, Colombo in the Cup final
that was played at St. Peter's College court adding yet another
illustrious achievement to their growing list of trophies.
The Gateway team remained unbeaten throughout the tournament and
displayed tremendous courage and commitment both at the semi final where
they beat Lyceum Nugegoda 47-46 and the final where the margin was
47-43. Gateway's Chavaan de Costa was named the Most Valuable Player and
Nikhil Jayasinghe the Best Offensive Player of the tournament. During
the early rounds, Gateway put down some of the traditional schools like
St.Sebastian's College Moratuwa 53 to 13, De La Salle College Mutwal 50
to 16, Azhar Central College, Akurana 44 to 25 and Maris Stella College,
Negombo 64 to 33. In a cakewalk to the semi finals they beat Kokuvil
Hindu College 78 to 42 at the quarters. Coach Tharindu Fernando said
after the final the boys were determined to give back to the school what
they received recently by way of a sophisticated rubberized air
cushioned court with modern state-of-the-art equipment. |
