Defending champions St. Peter’s College and last season’s League champions Royal College powered their way to the quarter finals of the Cup championships at the opening day’s matches of the Inter-School Rugby Sevens worked off at the Royal Sports Complex rugby ground, Colombo yesterday.

Besides St. Peter’s and Royal, the other six teams which qualified to play in the quarter finals of the main Cup Segment are S.Thomas’, Kingswood, Trinity, Science College, St. Joseph’s and Isipatana

St. Peter’s kept their dreams of retaining the seven-a-side title with two successive wins.

But the defending champions had to overcome some anxious moments in the second qualifying round league game.

Having registered a runaway 33-0 win over Vidyartha in the first game, the Peterites were fully stretched in the second game before they pulled off an exciting 24-17 victory against Wesley.

In contrast, reigning league champions Royal marched towards the quarters with two smashing victories against Mahanama 26-0 and Thurstan 33-0.

But St. Joseph’s accounted for one of the biggest victories of the day when they thrashed Maliyadeva 53-0.

The tournament will be continued at the same venue this morning with the quarter finals of the three respective segments.
