Old Bens meet Kurunegala Veterans in football final today
Old Bens will meet Kurunegala Veterans in the final of the seventh
annual Over-40 football tournament at St. Benedict's College ground in
Kotahena today. The winners will be awarded the Thilak Peiris Challenge
trophy, gold medals and Rs. 100,000 in prize money according to the
organisers the Sri Lanka Soccer Masters Association.
The losers will be presented the runners-up trophy and Rs.50,000 plus
silver medals while the Most Valuable Player and Best Goalkeeper will be
entitled to Rs.7500 each. Old Bens beat Old Palians while Kurunegala
Veterans overcame Badulla Veterans in the quarter finals. A protest by
Badulla Veterans over an alleged unregistered player who turned out for
Kurunegala Veterans was lodged but the result of the match was upheld.
In the semi finals Old Bens defeated Super Stars 3-0 while Kurunegala
Veterans beat Negombo Veterans 2-1. Old Bens won the trophy in 2010
under the captaincy of Athula Perera and again in 2014 under the
captaincy of Sisira Perera. Kurnegala Veterans are in the final for the
first time. According to experts Old Bens are the stronger team on
paper.
