Togetherness, laughter and music

BSC's The Music Project sees children from different backgrounds sharing, caring and learning:

In a beautiful gesture of goodwill and caring, lovingly tinged with overtones of music, Year 5 and 6 students of the British School in Colombo (BSC), hosted 'The Music Project' at the school , welcoming children from Kurunegala and Mullaitivu for a weekend of togetherness, laughter and music.

The fun began on Friday, January 29 and continued till the grand finale on Sunday, January 31. Friday morning's programme was led by The Music Project children, who showcased their orchestral prowess, inviting the visitor to listen to their individual sound. Later, they split into eight groups; with all the groups taught a new piece to play on the recorder. Once this was mastered, all the kids, numbering 300, played together, generating their particular brand of music that was both fantastic and fanciful!

This collective display was followed by an equally fun challenge, where each group was tasked with creating a different musical instrument out of every-day objects, paper or natural resources. Eager for the challenge, the kids give reign to ingenious creativity, using numerous materials on hand to create a range of instruments, which they then enjoyed showing off to one another with great glee.

In the evening, the kids had fund with the fund raising concert for The Music Project. It was filled with music, song and dance from both BSC and The Music Project. As The Music Project aims to bring children together through music, they also tied a collaborative item to bring everyone together, even the audience.

Saturday morning brought some of BSC's Year 6 students back to school, along with some teachers, for the activity morning. Again split into groups, they enjoyed a host of fun activities that included an opportunity to splash about in the pool, and using ICT to make music and paint to create a picture based on a piece of music and printing out the picture to take home. Sunday morning saw The Music Project packing up their belongings and getting ready for the long journey home. All in all it was a jam packed few days, which saw children from different backgrounds come together through music, make new friend and develop leadership and collaborative skills.
