Solicitor General Suhada Gamalath, the senior most officer in the
Attorney General's Department, is likely to receive a diplomatic posting
following the appointment of Jayantha Jayasuriya to the Attorney
General's post, highly placed government sources revealed.
However, there are no immediate vacancies in any of Sri Lankan
foreign missions, it is learnt.
Gamalath who was also offered the option of being appointed to the
Supreme Court before the nominations were given to the Constitutional
Council, had declined the offer, sources said.
Gamalath, though the senior most officer in Attorney General's
Department was by passed in the selection process for the top post last
week.
President Maithripala Sirisena included his name along with two
others from the Department in the nomination he sent to the
Constitutional Council (CC) last Monday. However, the CC sought
clarification on the nomination, requesting the President to nominate
only one name for the post. Gamalath's name was dropped on the second
nomination sent by President Sirisena with preference being given to
Additional Solicitor General Jayantha Jayasuriya. |
