Request to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights
Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera welcomed UN High Commissioner
Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein. The Commissioner spoke to a wide range of
interlocutors including the Human Rights Commissioner of Sri Lanka,
representatives of civil society, victims of human rights violations and
religious leaders in addition to President Maithripala Sirisena and
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The High Commissioner can go round the world and stay in big luxury
hotels and enjoy life. Instead he is involved in work related to human
rights at the UN.
When we were in difficulty during the recent war in Sri Lanka, many
countries came forward to help. As Sri Lankans we will never forget
their support.
Sri Lankans are not selfish. We are worried about the disputes,
fighting and human suffering in countries such as Syria, Iraq,
Afghanistan and Palestine.
We appeal to High Commissioner Al Hussein to visit these countries
and try to settle the disputes in those countries.
We thank the High Commissioner for the interest he is taking in world
peace and non-violence.
