Down Syndrome Day 2016

The Rotaract District 3220 Sri Lanka with the Kosala Dullewa Foundation joined hands with Royal College Doctors’ Association to observe World Down Syndrome Day 2016 on 21 March, with four main events, an awareness campaign, a medical camp, variety show and the art exhibition.

The art exhibition and competition ‘Colours of My World’ was the key event.

Last year, around 600 drawings by children with special needs were displayed.

Apart from the Arts competition, a special medical camp was conducted only for children with Down Syndrome with the support of Royal College Doctors’ Association at the College premises.

The annual observance of World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) was established in 2006 to promote awareness and understanding of Down Syndrome and to mobilise support and recognition of the dignity, rights and well-being of persons living with Down Syndrome.

Past WDSD activities have had a tremendous impact, as it showcases the abilities, talents and accomplishments of persons with Down Syndrome.


Scouts’ President Batuwangala passes away

The President of the Sri Lanka Scout Association and Honorary Chief Commissioner, Chandrasena Batuwangala passed away on Friday after a brief illness. During his tenure as Chief Commissioner, he introduced scouting to girls and equestrian scouting to Sri Lanka Scouts.

He was the pioneer in the building of the new National Scout Headquarters at Sir Chittampalam A. Gardiner Mawatha, Colombo 2, which was badly damaged by the terrorists’ air attack in 2009. His remains lie at his residence, Sri Sumangala Road, Ratmalana. Cremation today, March 27 at 3.30 p.m. at the Mount Lavinia cemetery.

 


Easter Sunday Service

The Easter Sunday Service of the Jesus Centre Ministries will be held today, March 27 at 9.15 a.m. at the Imperial Room of the Mount Lavinia Hotel.

The pastors will be Bro. Rohan and Sr. Marji Fernando.

It is open to the public.


Takes oaths as Attorney-at-Law

Miss. Rita Shobini Sivayogam took oaths as Attorney-at-Law on March, 1 before the Chief Justice K. Sripavan in the Supreme Court.

Shobini hails from St. Mary’s Lane, Mattakkuliya. She is the second in a family of four, Shobini, a social worker is an old girl of Good Shepherd and St. Bridget’s Convents.


Visakha Avurudu Pola’ on April 2

The annual ‘Avurudu Pola’, organised by the Old Girls’ Association of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo, will be held on Saturday, April 2 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the school premises.

The proceeds of the fair will be utilised for school development projects.
