Winner: Wonders of technology
Electricity and modern equipment make our day-to-day lives easy.
Electricity is used for technology to make instruments work. In the good
old days our ancestors pounded rice and ground chillies but now we have
electrical devices. These devices are the result of technological
innovation.
In Colombo there is not enough land to accommodate people and they
live in shanties and huts. But now many flats and apartment complexes
have been built in a limited area and modern technology is used in
lifts.
Pipe borne water and garbage dumping systems are made possible
because of electronic devices which highlight the wonders of technology.
Modern technology has also helped people to communicate with family
and friends living abroad via the Internet and Skype. It is possible to
pay bills through mobile banking.
However, there are disadvantages in technology because if electricity
is not available everything comes to a standstill. Therefore,
electricity is essential for technological devices to function.

Winner: Story of a rainbow
It was a rainy day. After a heavy shower the sun shone. I looked up.
There was a lovely rainbow in the East. It was a half circle in shape.
Everyone was glad to watch this sight. After a few minutes, the sun
hid behind the clouds. As a result, the rainbow faded away.

Winner: Minimising the danger of
polythene
It is dangerous to use polythene. We should always try to reduce
waste. Reduce, reuse, recycle, known as the three Rs are three great
ways to minimise this danger.
When we go to the market we must buy only what is necessary and buy
in bulk to reduce the waste in packaging. We must use glass bottles,
ceramic cups and paper bags.
Instead of plastic, we can use cloth bags and reed baskets. We must
reuse them. We must recycle cans, glass, plastic and electronic
equipment.
Recycling is an environment friendly habit.

Winner: Let’s keep environment clean
The environment is the natural surroundings around us. It can be
polluted by natural disasters, but more often it is due to human
indifference. The air is often polluted by smoke from factories and
vehicles. There is water pollution due to oil spills from ships. The
land gets polluted by accumulation of garbage and deforestation.
A clean environment is vital to reduce health problems and stress. A
pleasant surrounding develops a person’s mentality. Avoiding
deforestation, planting trees and having a proper garbage disposal
system are necessary to maintain a hygienic environment.
