Thomians down Trinity to win Canon RS de Saram Shield

High drama prevailed as S Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia beat favourite Trinity College by 23 points (one goal, two tries, two penalties) to 20 (one goal, two tries, one penalty) to win the Canon RS de Saram Shield in their schools under 19 Division One Segment rugby tournament match played at the Trinity College Rugby Stadium at Pallekele yesterday. At half time Trinity led 5-3.

But more than losing the match, a matter of concern was the action taken by the referee Aruna Rankothge on the Lions skipper and flanker Rahul Karunatilleke who was shown two yellow cards and this effectively sent him off the field as two yellow cards amounts to a red card. The first yellow card was for an infringement of lesser nature and the second one was for a high tackle.

With the Bradby Shield against Royal College next week this should be bad news for the Trinitians in the event Rahul Karunatilleke is given the two match suspension for a red card.

Will there be a deviation from the normal rule is a matter for conjecture for the rugby fans?

S Thomas' scored their tries through HAR Senanayake (one), S Nayanajith (one) and centre Henatikumbura (one) who also goalled one try and put over the penalties.

For Trinity Shalindra Alahakoon (one), Dilukana Dange (one) and A Shiek (one) and S Deshapriya goalled one try and converted the penalty.
