Police apprehended 15 persons from various flood-affected areas in the country
for suspected looting and stealing valuables from houses evacuated by victims of
the recent floods.
Nearly 70,000 affected
The Armed Forces and the police, continued their flood relief operations
yesterday focussing attention on relief and relocating operations, after
evacuating nearly 70,000 flood-hit people, in nearly week-long operations in the
worst floods reported in the country in three decades.
While cleaning contaminated wells :
Recent media reports have highlighted a shocking incident of eight people
suffering from the deadly effects of inhaling poisonous gas while cleaning a
drinking water well at the Lunugala Maha Vidyalaya.
Three of the men had entered the well allegedly operating a water pump fuelled
by petrol or diesel to clean the contaminated water and had fallen unconscious.
