Fighting Non Communicable Diseases
As per the statistics, the number of people in Sri Lanka who are with Non
Communicable Diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, chronic
kidney disease, osteoporosis, chronic respiratory conditions and cataract is on
the increase at an alarming rate. Through various media, medical professionals
try their best to educate the public about such diseases and provide advice to
prevent them.
Medical professionals are prudently citing not consuming sufficient vegetables
and fruits as one of the major root causes for these diseases and constantly
advising the public to have healthy and balanced diets rich in vegetables and
fruits. They say that about 80% of adults do not consume adequate amount of
vegetables and fruits. Whilst, giving due respect to these medical professionals
for providing these valuable information and advices, it should be noted that
many advisers do not look at the reason why people tend to consume lesser and
lesser amounts of vegetables and fruits. This is unfortunate.
Vegetables and fruits have lost all their taste due to bad growing or preserving
methods in which toxic or semi-toxic pesticides, weedicides, fertilizer or
preservatives are used. Let alone taste, any sensible person will be reluctant
to consume foods that are grown and preserved in this manner knowing that
consuming such foods will make him end up with even more serious health
problems.
Until this scaring and harmful situation is totally overturned and the country
once again starts to grow vegetables and fruits with poison-free and toxic-free
agricultural methods and stops using poisonous food preservatives, now wonder,
if all good advices provided to the public for consuming more vegetables and
fruits go unheeded.
For giving a solution for this national issue, the government and medical
professionals have a big obligation to make the people in the country produce
vegetables and fruits that are free from poisonous substances and preserve them
with non-toxic means.

Two Amexits
Amex or the American Express name is a world famous name because of the large
scale international travellers’ cheques business.
Way back in 1980 a branch of American Express Bank was opened in Colombo after
the introduction of the ‘free economy’ system in 1978 by the then government of
Sri Lanka. However, they closed their commercial banking business in Sri Lanka
in 2002.
That was the Amexit one.
The former Governor of the Central Bank Arjuna Mahendran (AM) completed his term
as the Governor on 30th June 2016 which was assigned to him after the
resignation of Ajith Nivaard Cabraal in January 2015.
AM was not reappointed and a new Governor has been appointed now.
So the exit of AM from Central Bank is the Amexit two in Sri Lanka’s financial
circle.
