Ajith Kumara Karunatilleke set up a new Sri Lanka record in the men’s Decathlon final but all eyes were focused on the women’s javelin throw event where Sri Lanka’s Nadeeka Lakmali not only failed to come within the Rio Olympic qualifying standards but was beaten to second place in the event on the second day of the 94th National Athletics Championship continued at the Mahinda Rajapakasa Stadium in Diyagama, Homagama yesterday.

Kumara, an electrical mechanical engineer of Sri Lanka Army, won all ten disciplines accumulating 6724 points, a 247 point improvement of his previous Sri Lanka record set two years ago in Colombo.

His performance in the ten disciplines were: 100m - 11.1 secs, Long Jump - 6.98m, Shot Put - 10.62m, High Jump 1.76m, 400m - 50.0 secs, 110 Hurdles 15.0 secs, Discus Throw 30.18m, Pole Vault 4.40m, Javelin Throw 48.79m, 1500m 4:50.8 min.

Olympic prospect Lakmali was stunned by ND Lekamge of Sri Lanka Army in the women’s Javelin Throw final. Lekamge’s effort was 56.06m while Nadeeka threw a distance of 54.96m to finish a distant second.

Thirteen finals are scheduled for today including Nimali Liyanarachchi’s 800m final where she is attempting to qualify for a place at the Rio Olympics in her pet event.

Meanwhile, High Jumper Manjula Kumara was given another chance by the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka to try and reach the Olympic qualifying standard along with three other high jumpers T.D.
