1st Under 19 ODI at P Sara Oval :
Proteas draw first blood
In what turned out to be a low scoring game South Africa drew first
blood to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match under 19 one-day
international series when they beat Sri Lanka by 16 runs in the first
match played at the P SaraOval yesterday.
In a game dominated by spinners South Africa came out on top
defending their moderate total of 185 by dismissing the home team for a
disappointing169.
The match winner for the Proteas was leg-spinner Mitchell Van Burren
who captured four wickets for 38 off ten overs. Jade de Klerk another
leg-spinner gave him good support with figures of one 40 off 10 overs.
No batsmen made more than Raynard von Tonder’s knock of 37.
Left-arm spinners Damitha Silva and Praveen Jayawickrama shared eight
wickets between them to keep the Proteas down to a reasonable total but
their efforts proved to be in vain when the Lankan batting failed to
counter the leg-spin of the visitors.
The second under 19 ODI will take place at the NCC grounds on July
11. |
