Theresa May, new British PM
Theresa May is the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. She
becomes the second woman in UK history to take up the top job. The
59-year-old politician will take over from David Cameron, who had
stepped down following the decision by the UK to leave the EU.
May, who had backed staying in the EU, has been Home Secretary since
2010. She is the MP for Maidenhead in the south east of England. The
Home Secretary is an important portfolio in the government. It means she
will be in charge the of the police, keeping the country safe and
control immigration.
Theresa May started politics by stuffing envelopes at her local
Conservative Club. May will become the second female Prime Minister
after Margaret Thatcher, who held the top job from 1979 to 1990.
October - Month of preventiON OF bribery and corruption
Minister of Education, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said steps will be
taken to include matters regarding prevention of bribery and corruption
into the school curriculum in order to create a generation of children
with qualities of preventing bribery and corruption.
The Minister stated this while participating as a chief guest in the
sensitizing workshop for the resource persons of the program scheduled
to be held, with the objective of preventing bribery and corruption
among schoolchildren and school community.
The Minister stated that steps would be taken to declare October as
the month of preventing bribery and corruption. He also mentioned that
in line with this program, the Ministry of Education will take action in
collaboration with the Commission for Investigating Bribery or
Corruption to organize several workshops, oratory competitions, debates
and poster competitions for the prevention of bribery and corruption at
school level and to establish "Supilipanna" social units in schools.
A gathering included the Director General of the Commission for
Investigating Bribery or Corruption, Dilrukshi Dias Wickramasingha,
Commissioner of the Commission for Investigating the Bribery or
Corruption, retired Senior Superintendent of Police, Nevil Guruge.
St. Joseph's champs at swimming championship

St. Joseph's College emerged champions at the 43rd Sri Lanka Schools
Age Group Swimming Championship. The Royal College Swimming team secured
second place. The competition was held at the Sugathadasa Stadium
recently. Royal College scored 412.5 aggregate points to second St.
Joseph's College. |
