Program for children with special needs

An innovative School Holiday Program for Children with Special Needs has been organised at St. Paul’s Church Hall Milagiriya on August 15, 16, and 17 , designed by the founder of Active Minds, Suzanne Dissanayake.

The program will be given to children between the ages of 5-16 years free of charge.

“We intend including a percentage of normal children to foster healthy social interactions, which will enhance the quality of life while developing a supportive and caring network of friends and peers.” a spokesman for the organisation said. The program will be conducted from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00p.m. each day.

It will be facilitated by trained support workers who have experience working with similar children.

The program is designed to provide challenging and stimulating opportunities for the children comprising art and craft, games, singing, music and dancing, drama, exercise, cookery, face painting, a magic show, fancy dress and many more.

Active Minds is a registered Training Centre for Children with Special Needs, committed to making every child with special needs realize their full potential through opportunities to identify themselves, be responsible for self and be connection with and contribute to their world, have a strong sense of wellbeing, be confident learners and effective communicators.

Active Minds conducts training of Shadow Teachers to assist these children in attending normal schools. Special training programs for parents have been designed to assist them in meeting the needs of these children. Counselling services are also provided for parents and children to help sort out difficult situations.

Most schools accommodate these children only up to 14 years. Active Minds provides vocational training for children over 14 years based on their skills and interests. This will enable them generate an income for their living and be independent.
