Plantation companies and estate worker trade unions
will have another discussion with Labour and Trade Union Relations
Minister W.D.J. Senewiratne on Thursday, October 13 to agree on a wage
formula for estate workers who are demanding a daily wage of Rs.1,000
against the Rs. 730 proposed by plantation companies.
The Northern Province Chief Minister is to sign a
memorandum of understanding to make Jaffna a twin city with a local
authority in the UK, Kingston upon Thames. The City’s website announced
that the Chief Minister, retired Justice C.V. Wigneswaran, will lead a
delegation to the UK to ink the deal at the Kingston Council Hall on
October 18.
Estate workers’ pay hike discussions continue :
Despite the assurance given by plantation companies
to raise the current daily wage of estate workers from Rs.620 to Rs.730,
estate workers continue their protest demanding a daily wage of Rs.1000.
Plantation sector trade union leaders claimed they are yet to agree on a
final wage formula and that another discussion has been scheduled for
October 13. |
