Govt sends 4,700 metric tons of essential food items to Wanni [September 20 2008]

The Government assisted by World Food Programme (WFP) has taken steps to dispatch 4,700 metric tons of essential food items to the internally displaced people (IDPs) in the Tamil Tiger rebel-held Wanni region now under siege of advancing state security forces.

The WFP has taken immediate steps to send truckloads of food to Vavuniya, the major town close to the battlefront. WFP officials are to monitor the distribution of essential food to the IDPs.
