Supreme Court stops tax on electric bulbs and mobile phones [September 25 2008]

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has issued an injunction to discontinue the recently gazetted environmental protection tax. Through the new gazette notification, the Government was planning to impose 2% levy on all mobile phone bills, three rupees tax on each light bulb with illumination power beyond 40w and 50,000 rupees per annum from each mobile and telecommunication transmission tower.

The Supreme Court issued this injunction allowing the Court to consider the fundamental right petition filed by Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero against the environmental levies.
