Security Forces approach Tiger heartland as 35 diein fighting [September 26 2008]

The Security Forces continued their move to capture the LTTE heartland of Kilinochchi amid heavy fighting that killed 33 Tigers and two soldiers. The clashes in Kilinochchi left 24 terrorists and two soldiers dead, the military said.

Heavy fighting, raged between the troops of the 58 Division and the Tigers in Vannakpullikulam area of Kilinochchi, killed 13 terrorists and injured many more while two soldiers also died. Troops captured nine LTTE bunkers in the area.

In separate incidents troops killed another 11 Tigers in Kilinochchi, the military said. Six LTTE cadres perished while another fourteen were wounded in clashes ahead of the Welioya battlefront yesterday (25).

Troops also destroyed two more LTTE bunkers. Three more Tigers were killed along the frontlines of Vavuniya. The troops have advanced now within 4 kilo meters of Kilinochchi, the Army Chief Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka has said.
