Three new records at School Games [September 27 2008]

Three athletes from Western Province Ishara Udayangani of Yasodara Balika Vidyalaya, Sanjuna Sumanaweera of Royal Institute and Shehan Ambepitiya of Gateway College established new meet records on day two of the four-day All Island School Games 2008 held at the Sugathadasa Stadium today.

The first record was in the girls under-21 pole vault event when Ishara cleared 2.60 metres in great fashion. She erased off the previous mark held by Mihirani de Silva of A. Ratnayake MMV, Walala by point 23. Mihirani height was 2.43 metres in 2007. Sumanaweera was responsible for the second record in boys under-15 putt shot.

The young athlete threw the iron ball to distance of 15.79 metres to break the record of Udara Livera of Pothuwewa MV, Palavi 14.45 metres in 1994. Shehan Ambepitiya of Gateway College, Rajagiriya who is to represent Sri Lanka at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India next month accounted for the third record in the boys under-19 - 200 metres clocking 21.60 secs. The previous record was held by B.R. Ashan Hasaranga of Richmond College, Galle - 21.80 secs in 2006.

Shehan's school-mate Keith de Mel who is also selected to participate at the Commonwealth Youth Games finished second with a time of 22.15 secs, R.S. Jayawardena of St. Peter's College was placed third - 22.55 secs.
