Women Probationary ASPs for Police Dept [October 04 2008]

Three women Probationary Assistant Superintendents of Police have been recruited along with 15 male officers after a competitive examination conducted by the Department of Examinations in November 2007.

This was the first time in the history of the Police Department where womengraduate Probationary Assistant Superintendents (P/ASPs) have been directly recruited to the Police Department, Secretary to the National Police Commission (NPC) L.C. Logeswaran said.

Although women were recruited in the past to other ranks such as Police Constables and Sub-Inspectors, no women gazetted officer was recruited directly to the Probationary Assistant Superintendent rank.

There have been instances where women from lower ranks have been promoted as ASPs and SSPs in the past. However, with the expansion of the police, the need arose to recruit women P/ASPs to man specialised branches such as the Women and Child Protection Bureau.
