34 dead as fighting nears LTTE base [October 05 2008]

The Security Forces neared the LTTE's main town in new fighting that left 29 terrorists and five soldiers dead, defence sources said today. The heaviest fighting was very near theLTTE' administrative 'capital' of Kilinochchi, where 20 Tigers and four soldiers died yesterday, military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said. The Army says its soldiers are now only just over one mile from the outer limits of the town, which the government has said it is close to capturing.

Nanayakkara said four other terrorists and a soldier were killed in clashes in the Vavuniya and Welioya regions. Soldiers overran five LTTE bunkers in the Mullaitivu district Saturday, killing five terrorists, the military said. The clashes left nine LTTE bunkers in government hands, it said in a statement.
