Over 136,000 displaced due to floods [September 26 2008]

Disaster Management Centre (DMC) of Sri Lanka said the total number of displaced people have risen to 136,000. An official of the DMC said that the total numbers of displaced families are 32,000. He added that four persons have been killed due to floods. Two deaths have been reported from Ja-Ela and one each from Moratuwa and Wattala.

The DMC spokesman said that Kaluthara, Colombo, Gampaha , Matara and Puttalam are inundated due to floods. Puttalam district reports the most displaced with a total number of 60, 000 people followed by Gampaha district with a total number 50, 000 of people. DMC of Sri Lanka said that under the supervision of Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights Mahinda Samarasingha, special programmes are being conducted to facilitate the displaced persons in the flood affected areas.
