Indian Navy steps up surveillance [October 28 2008]

The Indian Navy has stepped up surveillance in Indian territorial waters bordering Sri Lanka following intensification of Sri Lanka's battle against the LTTE terrorists, informed sources said. The Indian Navy has stepped up surveillance to ensure that "nothing untoward happens" in Indian waters, sources said.

The Indian Navy has conducted "coordinated patrols" with the Sri Lankan Navy earlier, which means that each Navy conducts patrols only within its own territorial waters. "The increased surveillance follows intensification of the military conflict in the island nation,"

India has strong defence ties with Sri Lanka, especially on training of the naval personnel.
