India tightens costal security

India has tightened its security following reports that LTTE terrorist leader Velupillai Prabhakaran may flee to India to escape from Sri Lankan Security Forces.

With the Security Forces in the North noose tightening around Prabhakaran and the revelation by the LTTE chief’s close associates that he would try to escape using a submarine has put Indian coastal security agencies on high alert.

The Centre has asked all the southern coastal states - particularly Tamil Nadu and Kerala - and the Coast Guard to remain vigilant in view of intelligence inputs suggesting that the cadre of banned LTTE may sneak into country in the guise of Sri Lankan refugees.

Sources in the Union home ministry said police chiefs of these states have been asked to deploy additional cops in the sensitive zones to keep a close watch on any movement along the coastlines in coordination with the Coast Guard.
