Over 3000MT food ‘delivered’ to NFZ - WFP

The World Food Programme (WFP) officials in Sri Lanka say there has been no let down in their food distribution to the people trapped in the battle zone.

The deputy country director of the WFP in Sri Lanka says that the quantity of food sent for the people in the “no fire zone” is not sufficient since they are forced to take only small quantities of food through fishing boats from mid sea to the coastal areas in the Mullaithivu district.

She says that since February this year till end April over 3000 metric tonnes of food has been sent to the area.

The Tamil Tigers have been claiming that no food supplies have reached the war zone over the last few days and that has led to starvation and malnourishment of the people trapped there.

“The difficulty now is ICRC has indicated that there is a storage problem in that area and we cannot take big quantities of food to the no fire zone,” says Ms. Asrat.
