India, Lanka to sign MoU on power transmission system

India has proposed to sign an MoU with Sri Lanka for conducting a feasibility study for establishing a power transmission system of 1000 MW capacity using overhead and sub-marine cables between two nations, PTI reported.

"The system will have two High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) terminal stations at both sides of the link," Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said in a written reply in Lok Sabha today.

As per the pre-feasibility report, the total estimated cost of the scheme is around Rs 2,300 crore, the minister said adding the length of the HVDC line would be approximately 350-400 kms.

"This would consist of about 200-250 km overhead HVDC line in India and between 30-50 km under sea cable and finally about 125-150 km of overhead line in Sri Lanka," he added.
